CAREERS OTHER THAN ENGINEERING AND MEDICINE

Board exams are around the corner. Many students may still be confused regarding which career they should step in after their school. When it comes to careers, Indians have been known to move towards the more lucrative and “safer” fields such as engineering and medicine. It is a common observation that parents also encourage their children to select science subjects to ensure steady careers. Have a look at the following career options: FASHION DESIGNING: If you love dressing up beautifully, you have good knowledge of latest trend in the fashion industry, you can go for this course. Though this is a tough place to survive with cut-throat competition, the scale of its scope and opportunities never drop down. Most fashion designers have a bachelor's degree in fashion design. In these programs, they learn about textiles and fabrics and how to use computer-aided design (CAD) technology. They also are able to work on projects that can be added to their portfolio, which showcases their designs. The fashion designers have varied options including designing, research, cloth production, textile designing, etc. They may join fashion houses/manufacturing/export units for a paid job or launch their own label in the market. The horizon of Fashion Design covers several other aspects of accessories, jewellery, footwear, etc. as well. CAREER AS AN AIR HOSTESS/STEWARD: If you have a pleasant disposition and can get along easily with all kinds of people, you can consider a career in the cabin crew of commercial planes as an air hostess after completing 12th. The job of air hostess is stressful. Despite long shifts and jet lag, she must maintain courteous and professional conduct toward difficult passengers. Sometimes passengers are drunk, angry or abusive. They often take out their frustrations over lost luggage or airline fees on flight attendants. An air hostess also needs to have the well-maintained physique, good health and stamina and ability to converse in regional/ foreign language for national/international airlines. JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION: If you are creative enough and like writing or expressing yourselves, media can quench your thirst. A Bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication helps you to make a career not only as a news anchor or reporter but also as a radio jockey (RJ), graphic designer, advertiser, event manager, Public Relations (PR) officer, Film Maker, Video Jockey along with opening the doors of several newspapers, magazines and news channels. ANIMATION: With movies like Baahubali, Kung Fu Panda, Ice Age and others being a rage among children and adults alike, the prospects of animation industry look bright. A job in animation can be defined as the art of breathing life to a character or an object. A blend of entertainment industry and technology, it is concerned with design, drawing, layout and production of graphically rich and attractive multimedia clips. There are many types of animation such as Traditional animation (cel animation or hand-drawn animation), Stop-motion animation (Claymation, Cut-outs), Motion Graphics (Typography, Animated logo), Computer animation, 2D animation, 3D animation. PHOTOGRAPHY: A picture is worth a thousand words. They can inform, amuse, shock or amaze and if presented in the right manner, they can be beautiful and creative. Are you creative and imaginative? Do you have an eye for aesthetic detail and composition? Do you enjoy presenting things visually and communicating ideas to others through photographs? Is photography more than a hobby to you? If your answer to all these questions is yes, then this passion can offer you a lot as a profession. With the growing importance of media and fashion industry, the idea of being a professional photographer now appeals to many, unlike the past. HOTEL MANAGEMENT: A part of the hospitality industry, hotel management has wide employment opportunities. Hotel chain owners are opening new hotels in every nook and corner of the world. So, the requirement for trained hotel management professionals is huge. Hotel Management also includes Hotel and Restaurant management, Cruise Ship Hotel Management, Hospital Administration and Catering, Hotel and Tourism Associations, Airline Catering and Cabin Services, Club Management, Guest Houses, etc. But, if the candidate is not willing to work in various profiles, he may not be suitable for this profile. An employee has to work in food and beverage service, housekeeping, sales and marketing, etc. Whether it is buying a cup of coffee or choosing a career, one has now a plethora of options. Gone are the days when there were only three fields engineering, medical or law. With so many options available, one need not conform to the age-old norms. You don’t have to do what everyone else around you is doing. Think out of the box!
