Quarantine brings an increase in Domestic Violence

This “intimate terrorism”- a term that experts prefer for domestic violence- is escalating at the time of the global pandemic. The data from different parts of the world is alarming. A Beijing based NGO that works for women and domestic violence said that they received an increased number of calls in their helpline since February this year.

Domestic Violence Helpline in Spain saw an 18% increase in the number of calls in the two weeks of lockdown. The French Police also reported a 30% hike in domestic violence cases during this period. The European countries also were seen following similar trends. Carolina Cuevas, Minister for Women of Chile said that there was a 70% increase in the number of calls to the government’s hotline for domestic violence in the very first week of the quarantine.
