India Demands Justice for Jaahnavi Kandula After Police Officer Video Goes Viral
India has demanded a thorough investigation into the death of Jaahnavi Kandula, an Indian student who was killed by a police car in Seattle, Washington in January.
The demand comes after a video emerged of a police officer joking and laughing about Kandula’s death.
In the video, Officer Daniel Audierer can be heard saying, “It’s a regular person. Just write a check – $11,000. She was 26 anyway, she had limited value.”
Kandula’s family and friends have been deeply upset by the video, and they are calling for Audierer to be held accountable.
“It is absolutely disgusting to hear a police officer mock the death of an innocent young woman,” said Kandula’s friend, Anjali Sharma. “Jaahnavi was a bright and talented student, and she deserves justice.”
The Indian Consulate General in San Francisco has also condemned the video and called for a thorough investigation.
“We are deeply disturbed by the video of the police officer mocking the death of Jaahnavi Kandula,” said Consul General Sandeep Kumar. “This is a clear violation of human decency and we demand a thorough investigation into this matter.”
The Seattle Police Department has said that it is aware of the video and that it is taking the matter seriously.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of Jaahnavi Kandula and we extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends,” said SPD Chief Adrian Diaz.
“We are taking the allegations in the video very seriously and we are conducting a thorough investigation.”
India has also called on the US government to ensure that Kandula’s family receives justice.
“We urge the US government to take all necessary steps to ensure that Jaahnavi Kandula’s family receives justice,” said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi.
“We also call on the US government to take steps to prevent such incidents from happening again.”
