Kerala Assembly Passes Resolution to Rename State to Keralam

The Kerala Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution urging the Centre to rename the state to “Keralam” in the Constitution and all official records. The resolution was moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who said that the name “Keralam” is the original name of the state in Malayalam, the language spoken by the majority of the people.

Vijayan said that the name “Kerala” was adopted by the Centre in 1956, when the state was formed. However, the name “Keralam” is the more popular and widely used name for the state. He also said that the name “Keralam” has a more historical significance, as it was the name of the region that was ruled by the Chera dynasty from the 3rd century BCE to the 12th century CE.

The resolution was passed unanimously by the Assembly, with the Congress-led opposition not suggesting any amendments. The resolution will now be sent to the Centre for its consideration.

The renaming of the state to Keralam is a long-standing demand of the people of Kerala. It is seen as a way to restore the state’s original name and to reflect the cultural and linguistic identity of its people. The resolution is also seen as a way to boost the state’s tourism industry.
