Kamala Harris as VP candidate and what will it mean for Indo-US ties

August 19, 2020, marked an important day in the history of the US elections. Senator Kamala Harris became the first Black, Asian-American, vice presidential candidate. The incident highlighted the importance of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote—this instilled feminism and equality among the US citizens. Harris was inspired by the women who fought for their rights back in the 90s.

Composition of her speech

Harris, in her speech, showed some values of compassion for all the people she instilled. She also spoke of her mother and expressed her commitment to the values she taught her. She powerfully revealed in her speech that she wants to see a beloved nation where all are welcome no matter what we look like or where we come from.

This could mark the end of racism and other inequalities in the US. Among all the positive words of her speech, she criticized Trump’s presidency, saying that conspiracy theories and racism in America are linked. “Today, the country feels distant. Donald Trump’s failure of leadership has cost lives and livelihoods”.

After showing all the darkness that the country has been facing, Harris promised to move America towards the light of equality and positivity.

Obama’s opinion

Former President, Mr Barack Obama, gave an informational speech convincing the citizens that they should choose Biden and Harris over Trump. Obama strongly expressed that he trusts Harris to change America into a fairer country. He ensured the voters that the economy would not continue to favour the wealthy under Harris’s presidency. Obama also said that he had no respect for US democracy since it has been in the hands of President Trump.

The present state of the US

Lack of school options amidst the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a childcare crisis in the US. Pop superstar Billie Eilish in her new song that she sang at the DNC, also agreed that the things are a mess under the Trump’s rule. “Donald Trump is destroying our country and everything we care about. We need leaders who will solve problems like climate change and COVID, not deny them, leaders who will fight against systemic racism and inequality,” Eilish said.

Clinton, who challenged Trump in 2016, warned the citizens that the country would worsen if it is with the current President. The United States is in dire need of a leader who can manage the country better with lesser controversies.

About Kamala Harris:-

Harris was well-known in San Francisco’s social circles. Her parents got divorced when she was 7-years old, and since then, she lived with her mother, who brought her up with positivity and boldness.

Harris has been holding the elected office since 2003 and never looked back. She has won the San Francisco district attorney elections two times in the history. Harris and Biden strongly believe in each other. “Senator Harris can be anything she wants to be. I mean it sincerely,” Biden said in December 2019.

Harris’s Impact on Indo-US ties

Although Harris grew up with a mostly African-American identity, she embraced her Indian identity in public. There can be a potential 1.2 million Indian-American voters who can affect the victory and defeat of Harris. The election is unlikely to happen because of the pandemic, but the impact of both the possibilities needs to be discussed.

Many democrats of the US, including Harris, have criticized India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Republican President George W Bush banned Modi’s visit to the US back in 2005 on account of Gujarat riots. In contrast to all this, Trump has maintained significant relations with Modi. Trump has never commented on India’s internal affairs except for the developments in Kashmir. He also supported our country’s border in the Indo-China tension.

Harris may split the Indian votes between the ones who support Trump and the ones who don’t. And Biden is not expected to be tough on China to help the Indian border. No matter what, Harris will always make a good choice and respect the Indo-US relationship, as expressed by Makhija.

Conclusion:-

Biden and Harris have given a ray of hope to the US after the presidency of Trump. Both of them are expected to do a lot for the betterment of the United States. Also, President Barack Obama’s judgment has never been questioned by the citizens. The younger Indian community is eager to make phone calls and vote for Harris to get her into the office. People will not be able to abandon a democratic ship when an Indian-American is captaining it. The domestic Indian politics has also increased the number of Indian-American voters in 2020.

Time will tell what the future of American citizens looks like. It will also tell the world the story of the US powerhouse as the story progresses.
