HOW TO MAKE AN EFFECTIVE RESUME
TIPS FOR A GOOD RESUME:
- Use good quality white or off-white paper.
- Use good spacing, bullets and wide margins to invite reader’s attention.
- Organize headings so that the most important points are first.
- Keep it short. Most people lose interest after two pages.
- Make sure it is neat, free of typing errors, and on plain white paper.
- Never give a reason for leaving your previous job, your salary expectations, your current job challenges etc., and discuss such points at the time of interview if required.
- Avoid using any unusual fonts that might be difficult to read or that might not display correctly on someone else’s screen: Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri are the safest options.
- Address any obvious gaps in your work history by writing a brief explanation where appropriate (perhaps you were travelling overseas, had a child or went back to university).
- Including a list of your hobbies is optional. But if you are doing so, avoid including ‘listening to music’ or ‘watching TV’ since they are too common.
- Proofread your resume again and again before the final submission.
