HOW TO MAKE AN EFFECTIVE RESUME

WHAT IS A RESUME? A resume is a one-page document submitted to a company at the time of recruitment process exhibiting the applicant’s work experience, skills and education. This written document is designed to provide a detailed summary of an applicant’s qualification for a particular job. IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD RESUME: Whether the applicant will be called for an interview or not depends on his/her resume. The resume is one of the most crucial steps taken during the job hunt. The employer will throw the ineffective resume into the dustbin in less than a second. A resume plays the same role of attracting and holding someone just as the trailer for a movie does. A resume is a quick trailer for who you are. It should say about your strongest skills and accomplishments. Hence, a good resume is essential to give you an edge over the other applicants. A one-page cover letter, submitted along with it, can provide additional information about the applicant's qualifications. WHAT SHOULD YOU INCLUDE ON YOUR RESUME? STEP 1: PERSONAL INFORMATION This section on the very top will include details of your name, date of birth, address, phone number and Email address. STEP 2: SUMMARY SECTION This section will start with the heading Summary. It will include all your relevant experience, skills, achievements and positive attributes. Choose attractive and eye-catching phrases while framing this section. If you are a fresh graduate, then you should specify about your small but impressive projects you have done at a university, highlight your achievements and project capabilities. STEP 3: EDUCATIONAL DETAILS Give a clear picture of your academic background. Tell your school name, board name and percentages scored in both tenth and twelfth class. Next, tell your college name, course name and percentage or GPA. STEP 4: SKILLS Now tell about your major strengths. EXAMPLES- Good oral and written communication skills Presentation Skills Action-oriented and result- focused Team player Ability to work under stress and deadlines Great time management skills Quick learner with good grasping ability Adobe Photoshop, MS-Excel, MS-Word TIPS FOR A GOOD RESUME: Use good quality white or off-white paper. Use good spacing, bullets and wide margins to invite reader’s attention. Organize headings so that the most important points are first. Keep it short. Most people lose interest after two pages. Make sure it is neat, free of typing errors, and on plain white paper. Never give a reason for leaving your previous job, your salary expectations, your current job challenges etc., and discuss such points at the time of interview if required. Avoid using any unusual fonts that might be difficult to read or that might not display correctly on someone else's screen: Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri are the safest options. Address any obvious gaps in your work history by writing a brief explanation where appropriate (perhaps you were travelling overseas, had a child or went back to university). Including a list of your hobbies is optional. But if you are doing so, avoid including ‘listening to music’ or ‘watching TV’ since they are too common. Proofread your resume again and again before the final submission. HENCE, IT IS A BIT DIFFICULT TO CREATE A PERFECT RESUME IN THE VERY FIRST attempt. IT WILL REQUIRE MODIFICATIONS FROM TIME-TO-TIME. A GOOD RESUME IS THE KEY TO UNLOCK CAREER OPPORTUNITIES!
