Changes to Labour Laws: Good or Bad? A Debate
The old labour laws were holding employers from increasing their size of business and employees as there was a law in place which required the employers to seek permission from labour authorities before firing their workers if their size of employees is more than 100.
As most businesses are market-driven, their need for employees is accommodative in nature and so in such a situation, if an employer is not granted permission to lay off workers when he actually needs to do retrenchment, his business can suffer loss and the company can go bankrupt.
This fear had prevented many from even opening a business and made many businesses to shut down. Doing away with such abrupt labour law can encourage businesses to run and expand and provide more job opportunities for workers. The idea behind bringing these changes is that strict working conditions and getting less pay is still better than being unemployed and having no money to sustain one’s own life and family.
