Who Should Choose the Career: Parents or Children?

Image result for who should choose the career parents or children quotesShould parents decide the career of their child? Or should the decision be left to the children themselves?  It is quite a debatable topic. A boy is born in a family and he is declared an Engineer by his parents. A second-grade child is told to take up only science as a stream since childhood. A sixth-grade student is forced to go for IIT coaching. No matter, the child might have some other interests.

Most of the students are forced to opt a course according to the choice of their parents. Parents decide what career their beloved child will pursue. There is pressure from parents on getting ranks in IIT, AIPMT, GATE, etc. Although the experience of parents can’t be put on a backseat, it is the child who should be given the right to choose their profession and live their dreams.

WHY SOME PARENTS FORCE THEIR CHILDREN?

  • Parents like their kids might also have some dreams in their teenage. But, most of the parents fail to achieve their dreams due to family or financial issues. In such cases, parents force their kids to adopt their dreams. They try to see themselves in their kids.
  • Also, most of the Indian parents feel that there are only two lucrative and safer fields- engineering and medical which can make their child succeed in life. Some parents also measure the success by comparing other’s children and the amount of money they make.
  • Many parents lack awareness when it comes to career opportunities. So they go with what’s well known and familiar- IIT, AIPMT, MBA, CA, IAS, CLAT. There are many more career options too- journalism, air hostess, fashion designing, hotel management, interior designing, teaching, event management, defence, animation, architecture, photography, radio jockey, foreign language translators and the list goes on. The career opportunities are not limited. What is limited is one’s thinking and awareness!

MY CAREER, MY CHOICE

  • It is the child who knows his interests, potential and capabilities better than anyone else. He knows well in which field he would be able to excel and perform better.
  • It’s not the parent’s life, it’s the child’s life. The child must learn to make decisions of their own in life and then deal with the consequences.
  • If children choose an occupation only according to the wishes of their parents, they will have a boring academic life due to lack of interest. College life is the most memorable phase of a student’s life. To enjoy this phase and make it more interesting, a child should choose his/her own profession. If you follow a career path chosen by your parents and which is not of your interest, you will have to face a lot of challenges and pressure. To avoid such situations, choose a career which interests you the most.
  • Also, a career is much more than earning a living. In a career, you can feel that your abilities are being properly used, that the work is worth doing, that it is interesting. It is necessary that a person must make his or her own career choice so that one can choose what matches with their ability, their values and aptitude in life.

WHY CAN’T PARENTS’ ADVICE BE IGNORED?

Every parent has gone through the dilemma of choosing a profession once in life. They have a treasure of their experiences as well as of others. Parents know more about life and the best careers for their children so there is no doubt that parents want to choose their children’s professions. Sometimes, a child is not matured enough to make choices. He/she might lack experience. It is the desire of every parent to see their children well settled in their life. At last, only the parents are going to pay the huge amount of fees for their children. So, their advice also could not be ignored.

ROLE OF PARENTS IN CAREER CHOICES:

  • If the child has any different path for the life, sit calmly and have a word. Listen to his point of view carefully. Don’t say ‘ You are just a kid, you don’t know anything.’ Support them. Trust them. But not dictate them.
  • The parents should realize that the world has taken a great leap and now there are a plethora of career options. Stop listening to the society. Listen to your child’s aspirations.
  • Every child has his own interests and capabilities. Every child is unique in his own way. A fish cannot climb up a tree. If the child has interest and passion in whatever he pursues, then there will be scope as well as money. There is no need to waste time, money and resources for a field in which he is not interested.
  • Don’t pressurize your child. Don’t play with your child’s career. Let him do what he wants to. At least, he would not put a blame on his parents for his failure.

CONCLUSION:

Hence, the parents and children must together make a correct career choice after discussions and through mutual understanding. Children should take advice and guidance from their parents and be totally transparent to them. The children can get information about the latest trends while the parents can share their practical experiences to make a decision.
