In an effort to prove his point he asked the House to raise hands if they had state-issued birth certificates, to which only 9 people replied in affirmative. “Will the 61 members of the assembly who don’t possess birth certificates, will they be sent to detention camps?” Kejriwal asked. He further added “Me, my wife, my entire cabinet don’t have birth certificates to prove citizenship. Will we all be sent to detention centres?”
He also insisted that if the government must go forward with the NRC it should be based on 2010 rules with no changes.
The chief minister Arvind Kejriwal explained that the panic in the country now is due to the fact that people have seen what happened in Assam where 19 lakh have been excluded from the final list of the NRC, with several of them suffering in detention centres. “In Delhi, there are about 40 lakh migrants from UP and Bihar, are they expected to go back to their villages to prepare documents?” he asked
