
India and Kenya Sign MOU for Shipbuilding Collaboration
India and Kenya have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation in shipbuilding. The MOU was signed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh of India and Cabinet Secretary for Defence Aden Bare Duale of Kenya on August 29, 2023 in New Delhi.
The MOU aims to promote cooperation between the two countries in the areas of shipbuilding technology, design, and construction. It also includes provisions for training and capacity building, as well as joint research and development.
The signing of the MOU is a significant step in the deepening of the defence and strategic ties between India and Kenya. It is also a reflection of the growing importance of the Indian Ocean region in the global maritime order.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Defence Minister Singh said that the MOU would “pave the way for a long-term partnership between India and Kenya in the field of shipbuilding.” He added that the partnership would “strengthen the maritime security of both countries” and “boost economic development in the Indian Ocean region.”
Cabinet Secretary Duale said that the MOU would “help Kenya to build its capacity in shipbuilding and maritime technology.” He added that the partnership would “create new opportunities for trade and investment between India and Kenya.”
The MOU is expected to lead to the development of new shipbuilding projects in Kenya, as well as to the transfer of technology from India to Kenya. It is also expected to create new jobs in the shipbuilding sector in Kenya.
The signing of the MOU is a sign of the growing strategic importance of the Indian Ocean region. It is also a reflection of the growing cooperation between India and Kenya in the field of defence and security.
