India Launches Bharat NCAP, Star Rating System for Cars
India launched its own car safety assessment program, Bharat NCAP, on August 1, 2023. The program will assign star ratings to cars based on their performance in crash tests.
The star ratings will be based on three criteria:
- Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)
- Child Occupant Protection (COP)
- Fitment of Safety Assist Technologies (SAT)
Cars will be awarded one to five stars, with five stars being the highest.
The Bharat NCAP tests will be conducted at the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) in Manesar, Haryana. The tests will simulate a variety of real-world crash scenarios.
Car manufacturers can voluntarily submit their cars for Bharat NCAP testing. The government is also considering making Bharat NCAP testing mandatory in the future.
The launch of Bharat NCAP is a major step forward for road safety in India. The program will help to raise awareness about car safety and encourage car manufacturers to build safer cars.
