From the past two decades, the global world has experienced the rise of populism and ultra far-right governments in countries of the U.S, Europe, and Asia. The postmodernist and realist thinkers have successfully bolstered the belief in Global Skepticism.
Morality is now being deemed as a social construct conspired by global elitists for their agenda of globalization and what conservatives feel should be subverted by realpolitik diplomacy.
The result has been the rise of demagogues as populist leaders thriving on far-right rhetoric supported by reactionary media who are skilled at constructing Post-truth narratives presented as news to propagate extreme conservative ideas to people on a daily basis.
Far-right propaganda has explicitly called for the appropriation of mass mediocre thinking over rare intellectualism and bigotry over morality. Ultra-Nationalism or Ethnic-nationalism has already vanquished the ideas of Nationalism in many countries.
Immigrants are being compared to leeches, minorities are being compared to existential peril to majority identity, secularism is being compared with the religious discrimination against the majority, feminists are being compared to nazis and left, and liberals are being compared to terrorists and terrorist sympathizers.
But this is not something just happening in one country; it’s happening in many, many countries. So, calling it an era of Neo-Fascism or Ultra Right Conservatism won’t be wrong. Xenophobia and misogyny have been scaling up, but how did the Far-Right Movements triumph in countries who were historically liberal democracies?
The broad-scale inferences that are drawn from the rise of right-wing populism in countries mainly point towards some events that led to discontentment among masses such as a significant economic downturn, recession, and acknowledgment of widespread corruption among ruling officials.
The severe economic failure of a nation renders masses unemployed and hopeless about their future and the future of their country, making them feel angry, fearful, and frustrated. Conservatives use this mass anger and frustration to develop a populist movement demanding change while hiding their agenda of Hate behind it. Once they come to power, they initiate the emergence of the Populist Nationalism to further their control by forming their cult through this.
The narrative of leaders of such movements aims to identify and interpret the reasons behind the collective misery of people, and a common enemy is developed to mobilize people through the propaganda of fear, as told by Noam Chomsky. As empirical evidence, I would like to invoke the case of the rise of Hilter in Germany as a Popular leader.
The Fascism in Germany started to develop from the economic hardships of people after World War I massive unemployment, growing poverty, hunger and loss of national assets and pride, all that had made a national clamor for change and reconstruction of Nation which Hitler promised that quickly made him a popular leader among the majority.
Hitler was famous for his oratory skills, which had extreme elements of Anti-semitic dog whistle. Anti-semitism in Europe or Christain Countries was not a new concept that time; it already used to exist, but Hitler had mastered the extreme Anti-semitic Propaganda.
He, with his Propaganda Minister Goebbels, had hugely propagated that all the misery that Germany had was because of Jews. They were the reason behind the spread of disease. They were becoming fatter and richer than German Christians.
They were portrayed as a threat to Germany and its national interest, which helped Hitler emerge as a National Hero who can protect Germany from the false grip of Jews. Jews were blamed for the sabotage of the Past glory of Germany, and eventually, they were made to look like a common enemy to the German majority.
The fear scaled up to the level that the majority felt that the Jews should be eliminated entirely from Germany, and History’s Worst Genocide happened. Despite all the cruelty and atrocities Hitler has committed on Jews, he is still a hero for many germans.
Anti-Semitism or Nazism has now seemingly resurged again in Germany. ‘Peter Kuras’ called this ‘Neo-Nazi Terrorism Epidemic’ in his article at foreignpolicy.com. Neo-Nazis of Germany denies the existence of the Holocaust; they openly admire Hitler as a Hero and feel proud in using Nazi Symbols, and like Nazis of rest of the world, they never feel embarrassed by propagating their pro-eugenic ideas and their bigoted beliefs.
And now, Post-COVID World would likely amplify the growth and expansion of Neo-Nazis all over the world. The Pandemic has downturn the global economic progress. It has affected an incredible number of businesses from small to large; many enterprises are adhering to workers entrenchment to survive.
This has rendered many unemployed and upended. The number of unemployed is likely to go further high, and if not from a disease, many would-be vulnerable to die from hunger and homelessness. We have already seen such deaths in our own land through news channels.
According to ‘The Economist,’ the economic fallout of Covid-19 would be higher among poor, marginalized, and women. This is because the jobs that are likely to be scaled down are the ones that are lower paid, and those are the jobs done by mostly poor, marginalized people and women.
The increase in unemployment and poverty among people in a nation would possibly surge its already present anti-immigrant and anti-minority sentiments. Minorities and immigrants are likely to be blamed for the spread of disease and miseries a country would be facing in the Post COVID World.
Border Control would tighten up, and Right-Wing narratives around minorities, immigrants, and marginalized would further get consolidated. Many people from Right-Wing groups have already sensed an opportunity to weaponize COVID-19 Virus to further their propaganda of Hate and target the community they deem as their enemy.
The Post COVID World is likely to carry on the legacy of the Humanitarian Crisis that its onset has created. The future of the World looks gloomy, and so holding the moral compass of society back, and awakening moral consciousness among masses that seems to be lost is very much crucial for a better future for all of us.
