Paranormal Activity and Mental Disorder
I remember looking at a woman, not much older than I, crying and hollowing in front of a wall with a lot of people putting incense sticks and rose petals around, the guard of the place explained a demonic spirit has taken her captive, her soul is at her mercy and the only exorcism can save her.
I felt sorry for her, not because of the demon that possessed her soul, but for the one that had her mind.
Such a poetic phrase it is, ‘Demons of mind’ often used to describe a mental disorder yet not free from the stigma, perhaps even our literature and language are historically embedded in the belief that mental illness is nothing but mental demons.
Recently I heard the news that someone committed suicide by jumping into a well in Firoz Shah Kotla Fort, while his death is reported, his culprit is invisible to the naked eye. For each child who died of the Blue Whale challenge, for each old lady who falsely prayed too much to her despair, and for each hallucinating old man who saw a ghost the other night, I put my faith in modern medicine and more so in the education system which frees people from shackles of their uneducated beliefs.
