National Wildlife Week 2017

The Key to preservation is awareness!

The National Wildlife Week is an attempt by the IBWL to spread awareness, create consciousness and induce general awakening amongst the citizens about the importance of wildlife. It is the realization that its absence would create an ecological imbalance. Apart from ecological value, wildlife also has economic, aesthetic and recreational values.

Wildlife preservation means active and organized wildlife management under which all forms of life would exist and progress simultaneously with human progress, each in its own sphere without any disbenefit to human interests.

India has a rich and wide array of wildlife resources. With the variety comes the responsibility of conserving and protecting them. The Indian government in an attempt to do the same established an Indian Board of Wild Life (IBWL) in 1952.  The Board has since been spearheading to arouse public consciousness in favour of wildlife preservation.

Every year from October 2nd to 8th The Government(s), environmentalists, activists, educators organize different activities to accelerate the process of wildlife conservation among people. There are conferences, awareness programmes, and public meetings among the nature lovers.

The highlighted participants being schools and educational institutions that organize events such as wildlife-related movie screening, painting competition/essay writing/ debate competition for young children with wildlife as the theme.

The week is essentially youth-centric as they are supposed to be the future of this country. They are encouraged to learn more things about the different wildlife animals and to participate in the quiz competition to increase their knowledge. The activities are theme-based and are made fun in order to grasp their attention.

National Wildlife Week 2017 :

This year was no exception. The Delhi Zoo celebrated the Wildlife Week with great zeal and show. On-the-spot painting competition, wildlife quiz, Rangoli-making, debate competition, clay modelling, poster- making and amateur photography were some of the events lined up for the week.

A Puducherry-based nature education firm, organized a free workshop on ‘Butterflies: their life cycle and importance in the eco-system’ for school children above five years to commemorate the national wildlife week in Pondicherry.

In Chandigarh, it was opened with a photo exhibition at the Sukhana Lake which had more than 150 photographs of wildlife on display.

In Haryana, a bird photography exhibition was put up at Sultanpur National Park. It showcased major local and migratory waterbirds found in the park itself. Over 100 birds were featured in the beautiful photographs taken by 70 eminent wildlife photographers.

The government has taken necessary steps as a response to the threat that India’s wildlife faces. However, we can also help by investing some of our time by following some basic steps like:-

  1. Keep water for birds on your balcony.
  2. Reduce waste. Clean up any litter that you see. Accumulation of excessive garbage is actually complete habitat-loss.
  3. One of the biggest threats to wildlife is pollution. Try to curb the emission of greenhouse gases. Use your car or air conditioner only when necessary.
  4. Stay away from plastic bags. Since they are nonbiodegradable, hence very harmful. They come back to us only in the form of toxic food & to the wildlife in the form of toxic death.
  5. Plant trees. Not enough stress can be put on this. It is easy and extremely helpful.
  6. If you can, volunteer. There are numerous NGOs (ex. WWF-India) that are a part of this attempt to preserve flora and fauna.

According to a study, India along with other 16 megadiverse countries is home to about 60-70% of the world’s biodiversity. What we as citizens need is not just a week of wildlife awareness, But a general understanding that it is our duty to do our part in preserving the undomesticated animal species, plants, and organisms.
