Mental Health- a latent issue amidst social desirability

A human being is the most complex creation. Made up of various organs and life systems, it learns to adhere, adapt, and live. The most structured yet complicated of all the body parts is the brain. If the mind is healthy, automatically the body is in good health. To keep our brains at bay, our psychology needs to be clear. Once we are transparent in our heads, have no pressure, anxiety, or stress boggling our minds, we are mentally healthy.

Lately, this particular topic has been a lot into talks, debate, and discussion, due to a global pandemic, of course, and also the demise of loved and adored people who went away too soon. The reason being quoted as for now is ‘Depression’.

It is startling to see so many people speaking about mental wellness on social media and other platforms to highlight the importance of it. Although it is an essential part of our lives that should be discussed every day since we are born, as whatever we do, however, we do, depends all upon our mental health. We have been taught at schools about our metabolic mechanisms with the help of proper diagrams but never given a correct explanation as to what is mental health, what are the criteria of psychological well being and how we can achieve it.

Mental health has become a potential issue in society due to society itself to present ourselves as desirable, friendly, and nonchalant. Meanwhile, everyone is going through some patch every time of the day. It could be rough or smooth, but it needs to be talked out; otherwise, it transforms into a volcano, within and the eruptions consequently affect us and also others around us. This is why understanding mental health, addressing issues, and seeking help or looking for remedies is what everyone should practice every day, everywhere.

Let’s understand the aspects of it. Learn the difference between mental disturbance and mental illness. Find the causes and of course how to keep well and healthy.

What is mental health?

Mental health refers to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well being.

It refers to how we react to different things happening around us requiring different kinds of emotional responses. If we feel right at the moment, take an interest in whatever we do feel internally jolly, then we can state ourselves to be mentally healthy. Still, the scope for regular discussion about whatever is happening with us is always, always open.

In short mental health is directly proportional to emotional well being because we are governed by what we feel.

What is mental well being?

Now, we have discovered what is mental health now let’s throw some light on what is mental well being

A person is said to be mentally healthy when he/she lives according to the designated routine of rising early, eating correctly, completing chores, meeting acquaintances, being socially active, and finally going to bed at a decent hour. Now, these defined activities DO NOT dignify the fact that someone is emotionally well. A person who has a regular sleeping routine can sometimes have insomnia due to some anxiety or stress. Somebody who takes proper meals three times a day might not want to eat all day, so we can never tell if somebody is emotionally healthy or not

So how do we discover if someone is emotionally healthy?

We talk- this is the first and foremost action that we should keep repeating with all dear and near ones. Talking to friends and family daily and on top of that, understanding what an individual is feeling and behaving, in the same way, is the key to know if someone is mentally healthy or not.

We listen- this should be the first action in the line of sequence but until and unless we get the other person to talk we won’t be able to deduce what we want to know. So after the other person starts speaking or starts sharing his/her problems with us, we should listen intently and patiently and then react or give some advice.
We agree- before countering the other person about whatever he/she says, we have to agree with what is being told to us, and then we start speaking.

These things are essential in a typical day to day conversation. Not only when somebody needs help!

Now when we know that emotions, behavior, and communication are the parameters based on which we can deduce if somebody is mentally healthy or not. Let’s talk about what is mental sickness, symptoms of it and what are the possible treatments and solutions that one can avail if somebody is not mentally healthy.

If somebody is feeling uneasy, not feeling like eating or talking to somebody or doing anything, that might be phase or mood swings or a consequence of some short-living stress that might come from daily activities, BUT if these kinds of behaviors persist, there is some issue that needs to be addressed.

According to a report by the World Health Organisation (2019), 7.5 % of the Indian population suffers from some mental disorder. Mental illness constitutes one-sixth of all health-related disorders, and India accounted for nearly 15% of the global mental, neurological, and substance abuse disorder burden. It had also predicted that by 2020, around 20% Indian population would suffer from mental illnesses instead it seems to have increased higher as everybody is going through some crisis, either financial or social, health or mental.

According to NAMH (National Alliance on Mental Health), 1 in every 5 U.S citizens experience mental illness each year. 1 in 25 U.S. adults experience severe mental illness each year. 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year .50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24. This pandemic has increased the figures, and the substantial rates would increase as lockdown and ban on many activities extend.

MENTAL ILLNESS

Mental illness can be described as disturbing reactions of mind that affect our thought processes, emotions, behavior and communication patterns. It affects us so much that sometimes the physical well being also gets adversely affected in a significant manner than we can ever imagine.

These are the primary symptoms of mental illness:-

1.Irritability
2.Irregular eating timings
3.Insomnia
4.Fear, worry or anxiety
5. Ultimately, social withdrawal.

The ones mentioned above can be catered to by regular communication, discussion, and therapy.

WHEREAS

Depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders, ADHD, OCD suicidal thoughts, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and complete social withdrawal are the major mental illnesses that need proper and regular medical attention.

Treatments can be divided into three categories:-

Psychological therapy:- regular appointments with a psychiatrist or therapy sessions where two-way communication happens can be beneficial, especially in the early stages. For severe stages, the medication should have opted first.
Medication– medication is essential and very useful for instant results. Consultations with good doctors and medical helpers can do wonders and can lead to the complete elimination of the problem.
Community Programmes– Rehabilitation centers, NGOs, and mutual support groups not only help in recovering but also help in overall holistic development by increased interaction with the society and doing chores.

If we talk about today’s context, mental illnesses or disturbances have hiked too much like the kind of sophisticated lifestyles and ambitious plans have ruined the inner peace of a large chunk of the global population.

New media is one of the significant reasons this generation is countering various mental problems. Due to the alter-personality, it forces us to possess and compete or move ahead from the people we follow there makes us a mess. Insecurity due to body shape, educational qualification, financial status, and work status makes us compare ourselves with our rivals and those of our age.

Mental illness can develop due to any reason. A person’s psychology never works according to a set pattern or rule. So the best that one can do to prevent any mental ruckus is to communicate regularly, keep rejuvenating the body and mind by taking breaks and doing recreational activities and develop potent psychology which would prevent any negativity from entering the brain.
