Former CJI Ranjan gogoi accepts the nomination to Rajya Sabha
A total of twelve members are nominated to Rajya Sabha by the president as per their outstanding contributions to various fields and to include them in public policy formation. Bollywood celebrities, cricketers and authors are predominantly included in this category for nomination. Historically A former judge has been nominated to Rajya Sabha twice, first Justice Baharul Islam in 1983 then Justice Ranganath Misra in 1998, what is peculiar here is that in neither of these cases was period, the time between retiring from one office and being appointed to another constitutional office, so brief.
The opposition party, press and general public all have their scepticism about this nomination. The allegations of quid pro quo are too strong to dismay particularly when Gogoi has given a number of judgments in the favour of the centre. Ex- BJP leader Yashwant Sinha has said that “I hope former CJI Ranjan Gogoi would have the good sense to say ‘NO’ to the Rajya Sabha seat offered to him Otherwise, he will cause irreparable damage to the reputation of the judiciary.” On the other hand, Congress communications head tweeted a picture correlating the nomination of Former CJI and a news headline saying “India’s Judiciary is Facing an Increasing Lack of Trust by Public”.
